A Biblical Breakdown of the Lord’s Prayer: How to Pray

Matthew 6:9-13 (ESV)“Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name.Your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors.And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.”

1. “Our Father in heaven” — Begin with Relationship

  • Truth: God is not distant; He is your Father.

  • Pray: Approach God as a child approaches a loving Father. You are not a stranger—you are welcomed.

  • Scripture Support: Romans 8:15 – “You have received the Spirit of adoption as sons, by whom we cry, ‘Abba! Father!’”

2. “Hallowed be Your name” — Praise and Worship

  • Truth: God’s name is holy and worthy of reverence.

  • Pray: Acknowledge His holiness and greatness. Worship Him for who He is.

  • Scripture Support: Psalm 103:1 – “Bless the Lord, O my soul, and all that is within me, bless his holy name!”

3. “Your kingdom come, Your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven” — Submit to His Rule

  • Truth: God’s rule and will are perfect and should be our greatest desire.

  • Pray: Ask God to reign in your heart, your family, your church, your city, and the world. Submit your desires to His will.

  • Scripture Support: Matthew 6:33 – “Seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness…”

4. “Give us this day our daily bread” — Depend on God’s Provision

  • Truth: God cares about your needs—physical, emotional, and spiritual.

  • Pray: Ask for what you need today, trusting He will provide exactly what is necessary.

  • Scripture Support: Philippians 4:19 – “And my God will supply every need of yours…”

5. “Forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors” — Confess and Forgive

  • Truth: You need daily cleansing, and you are called to forgive others.

  • Pray: Confess your sins and ask for a heart of forgiveness toward others.

  • Scripture Support: 1 John 1:9 – “If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive…”

6. “Lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil” — Seek Protection and Holiness

  • Truth: You are in a spiritual battle and need God’s help to stay faithful.

  • Pray: Ask God to guide you away from temptation and protect you from the enemy’s schemes.
